The Herbert J. Oyer Student Research Award

The Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology is pleased to announce the Herbert J. Oyer Student Research Award for 2010. ARA has long supported new investigators and we believe this award is essential to encourage outstanding research in the area of audiologic rehabilitation. The student investigator selected to receive the award will present their research at the ARA Institute and submit the work for publication in the Journal of the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology. The award recipient will receive registration to the 2010 ARA Institute in San Francisco on September 13 & 14, one year free membership in ARA and a financial award of $1000.00.

DESCRIPTION OF THE AWARD
The student research award was named in honor of Herbert J. Oyer, Ph.D., a charter member of ARA and leader in the field of audiologic rehabilitation. It was designed to recognize students completing exemplary research and to advance the area of audiologic rehabilitation. Initially developed by the ARA Executive Board in 2001, the first Herbert J. Oyer Student Research Award was given during the annual Business Meeting at the 2003 ARA Summer Institute.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING APPLICATIONS
Three ARA committee members will independently review each application. The student who receives the highest overall score will receive the award. The committee reserves the right to not name a recipient if submissions do not meet ARA’s award standards. Each submission will be judged according to the following five criteria:

  1. Appropriate topic area.
    The research study must be in the area of audiologic rehabilitation, which can include research related to: communication strategies, speechreading, auditory speech perception and training, hearing aids, cochlear implants, counseling, tinnitus management.

  2. Design of research study: (10 point scale for each item with 10 being the highest)

    1. Purpose of study stated

    2. Experimental hypotheses or questions stated

    3. Relevant and current references cited

    4. Subject variables

    5. Procedures explained

    6. Results reported

    7. Relevance of results discussed and summarized

    8. Professional writing skills and presentation

    9. Use of current APA style
